The Cost of Living in Thailand

Here is a rough cost (in Thai Baht and USD) of typical things in Thailand (July 2009):

Accommodation
Monthly rent for small apartment (bed/bath/balconey) = 2,500 Baht / $75
Monthly rent for a room in a budget Guesthouse = 4,000 Baht / $ 120
Monthy rent for apartment or bungalow = 6,000 Baht / $180
Monthly rent in a house / villa = 10,000-30,000 Baht / $350-900

Food and Drinks
Can of 12 oz mid-priced Leo Thai beer in the supermarket = 30 Baht / $.90
Bottle of 12 oz mid-priced Leo Thai beer at a medium-scale restaurant = 60 Baht / $1.80
A case of Leo beer at shop, 24 cans: 525 baht / $15.75

1 liter Bottle of water = 12 Baht / $0.36
1 can of coke or bottle of green tea = 15 Baht / $0.45
1 cup of ‘fancy’ coffee (e.g. latte style) = 40-60 Baht / $1.20-1.80

Noodle soup or small rice dish = 25 Baht / $0.75
A bunch of bananas = 25 Baht / $0.75
Small bag of fresh fruit on the street = 10 Baht / $0.30
Whole grilled chicken from street vendor = 50-100 Baht /$1.50-$3

2 course meal (incl. 1 non-alcoholic drink) at local Thai restaurant for 2 = 80 Baht / $2.40
Upscale restaurant, i.e. hotel, 2 course meal for 2 (with 1 glass of wine each) = 1,600 Baht / $48

Average price for 2 people to eat at food stalls or local Thai restaurants for 3 days, 3 meals per day, one dish each, with drink: 400 Baht / $12

Transportation
Average taxi ride (across city) for 2 people = Bangkok: 250 Baht / $7.50 | Other places: 70 Baht / $2.10
Car Rental. Self-drive. One day excluding gasoline = 1,400 Baht / $42
Car Rental Service with driver. One day excluding gasoline = 1,800 Baht / $54

Entertainment
Cinema ticket for 1 person = 120 Baht / $3.00

Day trip out of town somewhere = between  1,000-2,500 Baht / $30-75 per person (depending upon how far you go & what sort or guide you go with or whether you hire a cab and go on your own)

  1. These seem like Bangkok prices, rather then 'Thailand' prices. I find everything at a cheaper price in Chiang Mai (except the beer)
  2. Just what I was looking for! Will definitely have to head to Thailand soon (it's Argentina first, though) and I was curious as to the current real world costs. Thanks!
